39 papers in one list

The app opens on the list of Swiss newspapers and news sites — Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Blick, 20 Minuten, Tages-Anzeiger, Le Temps, SRF, Corriere del Ticino and Le Matin and 31 more. The list covers all three language regions: German, French and Italian papers stand side by side, as the country itself does.

Tap a paper and its front page opens. Tap the star beside it and the paper moves up into Favourites at the top of the list, so the two or three you read daily do not have to be found again each time. The order can be dragged into place with the handle.

The list sits as a drawer on top of the browser rather than as a separate screen. That means the paper you were reading stays behind it: open the list to look elsewhere and change your mind, and one tap puts you back — at the same place in the article as before.

The settings you actually use

Papers open inside the app, in its own browser. That can be switched off, so links open in the phone's normal browser instead — it is the top switch under Browser in the settings, and the rest below it applies only while it is on.

Then come the switches you actually reach for: turn images off on a poor mobile connection, decide whether a page may open windows by itself, and choose whether the URL bar is shown. The paper list can take a search field, sit at the bottom so it can be reached one-handed, or fill the whole screen — and the app can stand light, dark or follow the phone.

From the menu the page can be translated, searched, shared, copied or opened in the phone's own browser — and web data for that one site can be cleared without touching the rest.

The app itself is in German. Menus, settings and messages follow the phone's language rather than the app's home country — eight languages are translated, and the rest fall back to English.

What the app does not keep

There is no account and no profile. The app knows which papers you have made favourites and which page you were last on — both live on the phone.

'Clear browsing data on close' clears cookies and stored pages every time you leave the app with the back button. If you simply switch to another app, it happens the next time the app starts. There is also a button to clear immediately.

Anonymous statistics can be switched off under data sharing, and the contact address is in the app — not only in the store.
