What it does

Togtrafikken shows every train in the country live on the map — IC, express, regional and S-trains. Each train is coloured by how late it is, so one glance tells you whether there is trouble, before you get to the platform. The traffic data comes from Rejseplanen.

How it works

The departure board and the trains on the map

Two things you otherwise have to find on separate websites: the official departure board for the stations you actually use, and Banedanmark's live map where the trains move in real time. Togtrafikken puts them in one app with no advertising.

The departure board for your own stations

The app opens on the departure board for the station you looked at last. It is Rejseplanen's own board — the same figures as the screen on the platform — with departure time, expected time, train type, platform and destination.

The stations sit as buttons at the top: tap to switch, plus to add. You can search by name or pick from the list of the largest stations, so a commuter's two fixed stations are one tap away.

The board shows trains only. Buses and light rail are filtered out, because the app is called what it is called, and because a board with everything on it makes your own train hard to spot.

The trains while they are running

The live map is Banedanmark's own: every train is a dot that moves, labelled with its line — IC, ICL, RE, the regional letters, and the S-trains' A, B, C, E, F and H.

The filters decide what the map shows. If you only want S-trains, switch the other operators off; if you want to follow one operator, they each have their own colours. The map can be centred on a station, so you do not have to hunt for your own line every time.

It is a good tool when the board says 'delayed' without saying how long: on the map you can see where the train actually is.

An independent app — and what that means

Togtrafikken is not made by DSB, Banedanmark or Rejseplanen. It shows their data, states clearly where the figures come from, and links on to the source.

The app is published without advertising. That is not generosity but a consequence: Rejseplanen's free data access covers non-commercial use, and an ad-funded app would count as commercial. The choice was ads or data — and it became data.

Under Mere you can enter your own API key from Rejseplanen Labs. With a key in place the app's commuter half opens: saved routes between two stations with an automatic direction switch at midday, each train's full route stop by stop, service messages, and an alert if the train on your route is cancelled or more than five minutes late.

The same place holds the anonymous statistics, which are off by default, and a field for sending suggestions and faults directly.

Where the figures come from

The app has no data of its own. It shows the official sources and says where they come from.
